Unexpected Acts of Kindness

There have been numerous studies in human development that suggest it is easier to express ourselves in writing versus in words. You don't have to be a genius to know this. One of the greatest fears of most people is public speaking. This can mean in front of a group or a one-on-one conversation. Many people would just rather write it down and explain it in words. The fear of public speaking was the subject of a previous column and I will address it again one day because it is an important topic.

Expressing ourselves in writing pays many benefits. Becoming a person that is remembered as someone who remembers will make a big difference for good in the lives of everyone you associate with, personally and professionally and in yourself. The personal benefits you gain are astounding:

  • You create and maintain lasting relationships, personally and professionally.
  • You have a professional and simple way to prospect and follow-up with people.
  • You can express yourself at impromptu times and make a positive difference in others lives.
  • You will motivate, encourage, uplift and show appreciation in ways that you never thought possible.
  • You will create a positive activity that will make you a better person in every aspect of your life. Your relationships will be stronger, your self confidence will grow, your ability to express yourself will increase, and you will change the world's pattern of negative thinking into positive thoughts and activities.
  • You will be remembered as someone who remembers

As a result of all of these things, new opportunities will surface in your life. You will meet and become friends with people that will help you accomplish goals and dreams that you never thought were possible.

Most of us love being on the receiving end of an unexpected act of kindness. The nice driver who waves you in while so many others never make eye contact. The extra free scoop of your favorite flavor at the local ice cream shop just because youre a regular. The store clerk who told you about the sale going on. The person who stopped to help you change your flat tire in the rain and wouldnt take a dime. The free desert after a great meal when the waitress learned it was your anniversary. And the list goes on for all of us. We love random acts of kindness.Whats even better than being on the receiving end of a random act of kindness is to be on the giving end. You know it. As good as it feels to receive the attention, the feeling after giving is uplifting. It is inspiring. It breeds other good things in your life. It just does. People who practice the art of giving on a regular basis are different and they are spreading something that is priceless and something this world needs more of.

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.Serve and thou shall be served. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Something as simple as sending an unexpected greeting card to people is one way of spreading the positive feeling and passing along the act of kindness. Like the person who waves you into the traffic line, people who send unexpected greeting cards are making life happen instead of trying to deal with what happens in life. They know what goes around, comes around.

Try it. Do you have some old friends or former customers you havent talked to in a few years? Maybe 10? Maybe 20? What about that favorite uncle or aunt you loved when you were a kid? Where are they now? How are they doing? Send them a card and bring a big smile to their face. Your unexpected act of kindness just might make a big difference in someones life today.
